{"id":1476,"date":"2013-07-18T20:38:52","date_gmt":"2013-07-19T02:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.csafarmdurhamkawartha.com\/?p=1476"},"modified":"2013-07-18T20:38:52","modified_gmt":"2013-07-19T02:38:52","slug":"horsing-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.csafarmdurhamkawartha.com\/?p=1476","title":{"rendered":"Horsing Around"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As many of you already know \u2013 Jessica farms almost exclusively with horses.\u00a0 This week, the horses raked hay for David, disced a field that had been plowed, helped retrieve implements from storage and performed the regular row cultivation in the garden.\u00a0 This week, Alex and Jeanne used a single horse scuffler to get at the weeds in places where the row cultivator could not go.\u00a0 The corn has grown tall enough that the row cultivator would not go over top of it.\u00a0 Once Lenny settled into a pace that Alex could keep up with, they did an excellent job of tackling the weeds!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/beeecade760fa6cae21ced2b3\/images\/single_horse_scuffling.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" align=\"none\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The single horse scuffler had been in storage at the back, so we had to take the horses gingerly across a field of barley.\u00a0 Alex was practically drooling over it \u2013 looking forward to making some beer when it is ready!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/beeecade760fa6cae21ced2b3\/images\/barley.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" align=\"none\" \/><br \/>\nWe have also been learning to make cheese on the farm.\u00a0 Fanny is a Jersey cow \u2013 and when her son No Nuts doesn\u2019t drink it all, we can use her high fat milk to make cheese.\u00a0 Sonya is half milking shorthorn, a quarter Limousine and a quarter Holstein, and after she lost her twin calves during birthing, we decided to milk her as well.\u00a0 She has taken to it pretty well, even though she was never milked in the past.\u00a0 Jessica has only been kicked once!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/beeecade760fa6cae21ced2b3\/images\/DSC07181aff05c.JPG\" width=\"597\" height=\"400\" align=\"none\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that we have pork available by the half animal for $200 and whole animal for $400, cut, wrapped and frozen.\u00a0 Also &#8211;
